After four years of participation in the TOMODACHI US-Japan Youth Exchange Program, Globalize DC (the program’s DC partner) is taking steps to create opportunities for more DC students to learn about Japan, and to study the Japanese language. We know there are students all over the city who are fascinated with Japan, Japanese culture, and the Japanese language. Also, many of our TOMODACHI participants are inspired to study Japanese, yet no DC public schools offer Japanese.
So, thanks to a generous grant from the U.S.-Japan Foundation, Globalize DC is very pleased to announce the launch of a new program, Japanese Plus.
Japanese Plus is a single site afterschool Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program for DC public high school students. The program runs from the beginning of October 2016 through May 2017, and is offered at no cost to students. We expect that students will be able to earn world language credit for level 1 Japanese that can be applied towards high school graduation. The program meets twice a week (Wednesdays after school and Saturday mornings). Japanese Plus is open to students in either DCPS or DC charter schools citywide. Student selection is based on a citywide, competitive application process.
Great news!! The 23 students of the inaugural class of Japanese Plus have been selected. Stay tuned for our announcement.
