The third year of the TOMODACHI US-Japan Youth Exchange Program introduced three important changes:
- For the first time, students from the Tohoku region were invited to participate as full members of the program.
- For the first time, both segments of the program (Japan and DC) took place during the summer 2015. This allowed Japanese students for the first time to participate fully in the Japan side of the exchange, including travel to Tohoku.
- For the first time, the program started in Japan and finished in DC. During years one and two, the DC segment took place during the summer, followed by the Japan segment in November.
